We Love Tsiknopempti: Smokey Thursday in Athens, Greece
The player loads from YouTube only when you press play.
We had no idea Tsiknopempti was happening until the smoke hit us, grills set up right on the sidewalks across Athens, whole neighborhoods turning into one long open air barbecue for the day. Smokey Thursday marks the last big meat feast before Lent begins, and the city treats it like a citywide holiday rather than a private tradition, strangers sharing tables and handing out food to anyone walking past. We ended up eating more than we planned, and did not mind.
