From Diesel to Electricity: Watching an Athens Trolleybus Switch Modes
The player loads from YouTube only when you press play.
Some of Athens’ trolleybuses run on a small onboard diesel engine whenever they lose contact with the overhead wires, switching seamlessly back to electric power the moment the driver reconnects the poles. We happened to catch exactly that moment on camera, the driver stepping out, lifting the poles back into place by hand, and the whole bus shifting from combustion to silent electric power in a matter of seconds. It is a small piece of hybrid engineering most riders probably never think about.
