Chania’s Venetian Harbor has no canals and no gondolas, but the name comes from its builders, not its looks: Venice controlled the city in the 14th century and shaped the harbor to suit its military and trading needs. We walked the promenade that rings the small port almost every evening during our two months on Crete, usually timed for sunset, when the light over the water and the old lighthouse across the bay is at its best.
