US President Portrait Collection

The National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC holds an entire collection of presidential portraits, painted across very different eras and in very different styles, hanging together in a way that makes the shifts in artistic fashion almost as interesting as the historical figures themselves. We walked the room slowly, comparing formal, stiff early portraits against looser, more expressive later ones. It is a quiet corner of the museum that rewards taking the time to actually look closely.
