Oviedo, Spain: The Gaita Asturiana
The player loads from YouTube only when you press play.
Spain has its own regional bagpipe tradition in Asturias, and hearing the gaita played live in Oviedo for the first time was a genuine surprise, the sound close enough to Scottish or Galician bagpipes that it briefly threw off our sense of exactly where we were standing. We filmed a street musician working through a tune, the drone and chanter combination carrying clearly across the plaza. Regional traditions like this one rarely make it onto anyone’s mental map of Spain beforehand.
