For Jurgen’s 50th birthday, Mike booked us two nights at the Winter Palace, the grand old hotel on the east bank of the Nile in Luxor. We do not usually splurge on hotels like this, but walking up to the building for the first time made it clear why people make an exception here. Wandering the halls and gardens, it really did feel like stepping into another century, one built for travelers with a lot more time and money than we usually have.
