We turned the climb up Mount Pilatus into a full day out, starting at the Mattenhof train station and working our way up through two different gondolas to the 2,128-meter summit. Every stage of the trip offers a different kind of view, from the lake and city of Lucerne spread out below to, near the top, nothing but peaks in every direction. By the time we reached the summit platform, the whole day had felt like a slow reveal rather than a single big payoff.
