Once a year, I make it back to Darmstadt to see family and friends, the city where I spent my teenage years living in the shadow of nearby Frankfurt. This video was filmed on my most recent visit, wandering through the city center and up to the Mathildenhöhe, the artists’ colony that’s become the city’s best-known landmark. It took me years to appreciate this place properly, and coming back now, older, I finally see what makes it beautiful.
