Jurgen grew up in Darmstadt and remembers seeing these dioramas on a school trip as a kid, long before he had any idea how significant they actually are. Created by Ernst Beyrich and first shown to the public in 1906, they are among the oldest dioramas anywhere in the world, and the level of detail in the ten large scenes still holds up well over a century later. Revisiting them as an adult turned out to be a very different experience than the school trip version.
