Canterbury Cathedral has a scale that photographs never quite prepare you for, vaulted ceilings rising so high above the nave that the stonework at the top nearly disappears into shadow no matter how the light falls through the windows. We walked through slowly, letting the space do most of the work rather than narrating over it, since centuries of Gothic architecture built to inspire exactly this kind of silence do not really need much explanation layered on top.
