During our month based in Whitstable, we allowed ourselves exactly one proper day trip, and it had to be Canterbury. Getting there could not have been easier, just a double-decker bus ride, and once inside the cathedral we understood why it gets called the spiritual home of the Anglican Church. Founded all the way back in 597 AD, the building has been added to and rebuilt so many times over the centuries that walking through it feels like moving through layers of English history.
