A long layover in Istanbul gave us just enough time to book a hotel near Taksim Square, and the view from our window happened to include the newer mosque that now anchors one side of the square, its domes and minarets lit up against the evening sky. Having lived in this city before for an extended stretch, seeing that particular skyline again from a hotel window brought back a specific kind of familiarity that a typical layover almost never allows for.
