Santiago Calatrava’s new train station in Mons, Belgium, the Gare de Mons, opened in December 2024, and we happened to be there with our camera in its very first week of operation. We aren’t huge Calatrava groupies, it was honestly a coincidence. His style is absolutely distinctive – gleaming white, ultra modern, like the skeleton of some fantastical space creature crashed to earth. The problem here is one of scale: the station and its tracks stretch along the entire western side of town. Budgeted at €37 million, it cost nearly 13 times that and opened more than nine years late. Get a better idea of its sheer size by watching the video.
